DAMA's Mission
for nationally trained doulas, uphold professional standards of doula practice, and provide education and peer support to its members. DAMA's History
pregnant women and maternity care providers around the country. This growing awareness coupled with frequent local doula trainings led to an increase in the number of women in our area wanting to become birth doulas and in the demand for their services.
childbirth educators and maternity care providers established the Doula Association of the Mountain Area (DAMA). Our founders envisioned an organization that would promote the role of professional doulas to the public, ensure the availability of trained birth companions to all pregnant women in the Western North Carolina region and act as a support network for trained doulas working towards certification in the profession. Since then the organization has expanded to include postpartum doulas, also as a result of public demand and an increase in the number of women trained in that specialty.
Membership in the association is open to DONA, CAPPA, or ICEA trained or certified doulas who meet application requirements. Meetings are held monthly and officers are elected annually. In addition to acting as a referral service for doulas, DAMA sponsors training programs each year on topics of relevance to doulas and other maternity care/childbirth professionals. The organization is also involved in a variety of outreach activities and events designed to raise community awareness about doulas and actively supports the establishment of mother- and baby-friendly practices in local hospitals. 2008-2009 Officers
